Introduction
This is a pop-up (hot-key) application. While you're running other
applications, you can press Alt/Right-Shift to send and receive
electronic mail. Press X to return to the foreground application.
Main Menu -- From the main menu, you can send mail (press S), inspect
the contents of the Inbasket (press I), the Outbasket (press O), return
to the foreground application (press X), or unload the electronic mail
feature from memory (press F10). Alternately, you can unload both the
Mail program and the Postman program by pressing Alt-F10 instead of F10.
If you unload the Postman program, your computer will be unable to
receive incoming mail until you run Postman again.
Sending/Reading Mail -- Sending, reading, and disposing of mail are
explained on the following help screens. You can attach files (binary
or text) to a mail memo, and you can send a memo to a list of people by
using the CC: feature.
pg2
Sending Mail
When you press S to send mail, you are asked for the name of the
recipient (you must type the person's name as he/she is known on the
network) and you are asked for the title of your memo. If you change
your mind about sending the memo, just press ESC instead of entering
the recipient's name.
After entering the title of the memo, you are presented with a simple
one-screen text editor. If your memo exceeds about 20 lines in length,
you should use a separate text editor (or word processor) to create your
document. You can then use the "attach file" feature to send the long
document as a mail attachment.
The text editor itself is explained on the next help screen.
After you tell the text editor to save your file, you are asked for
the name of a file you want to attach to the memo. Enter the full name
of the file (drive:\path\filename.ext) or, if you don't want to attach
a file, just press ENTER. You are then asked for a list of people to
whom carbon copies should be sent. Enter the name(s) of the people as
they are known on the network, separated by commas or spaces. Just press
ENTER if you don't want to send carbon copies.
pg3
The Text Editor
The text editor you use to compose your electronic memos is extremely
simple in nature. You can only enter up to 20 lines (one screen)
of memo text, and you must press ENTER at the end of each line (the text
editor does not perform word wrap for you). You should not go past
column 75 or so for each line of text.
The editor allows you to move around the screen with the arrow keys
(-, -, , ). The backspace key is non-destructive (it acts just like
the left-arrow key). The HOME key puts the cursor at the start of the
line; the END key puts the cursor at the end of the line. The TAB key
moves the cursor 4 columns to the right. The INSERT key toggles insert
mode, and the DELETE key deletes the character under the cursor.
Press F4 to erase the rest of the line, from the cursor position to the
end of the line. Press F5 to insert a blank line; press F10 to delete an
entire line of text.
Pressing ESCAPE allows you to change your mind about sending the memo
(you are asked "Are you sure?"). Press F2 when you are finished composing
your memo.
pg4
Inbasket/Outbasket
If you have multiple memos in your Inbasket or Outbasket, you can select
one of them by using the up or down arrow keys (, ). When the desired
item is highlighted, press the enter key (─┘). The memo text is
displayed on the screen.
If the memo is from your Inbasket, you can press ESCAPE after reading
the memo (it remains in your Inbasket). You can press D to delete
the memo, S to save the memo as a regular file, P to print the memo,
or R to reply to the memo. Memos you have read are marked with an *.
While you browse undelivered mail sitting in your Outbasket, the Mail
program defers its attempts to deliver those items. To schedule items
in the Outbasket for delivery, switch the display to Inbasket.
A memo that sits in the Outbasket for more than a minute or so is
undeliverable because (1) the recipient is not running the Postman program
or because (2) the recipient name is mis-spelled. To change an Outbasket
item, select it (highlight it and press ENTER). You can then press D to
delete the item (withdrawing it from the Outbasket), C to change the memo
text (including the recipient name), or ESCAPE to leave the item alone.
